Ulrich Zumbrunnen

Life Sketch
Ulrich Zumbrunnen was the son of Johann Zumbrunnen (known as the younger) who had died young while in office as the Landvogt, or bailiff, of Sargans. Ulrich must have been orphaned and returned to live with his family in Attinghausen.

He followed his father’s path and became the Bailiff of Sargans himself from 1494-96, nearly 30 years after his father’s death.

After serving as bailiff of Sargans, Ulrich disappears from the records. I note that he is approximately the right age to be the father of Emman Zumbrunnen, a member of an otherwise unexplained branch of the Zumbrunnen family that appeared in Fribourg, Switzerland, in the early 1500s. Thus a hypothesis is that since Ulrich’s father was a second son who died young, Ulrich inherited no land and moved to Fribourg, where there were opportunities for talented men even if they owned no land.
