Burkhard “Cicero” Zumbrunnen

Burkhard “Cicero” Zumbrunnen was born in 1602, the son of Josue Zumbrunnen II and Barbara Hassin.

He was known for his cultural interests, particularly in history, and had the nickname “Cicero” after the Roman scholar. He became the chief clerk of Uri at the age of 28, and held the job from 1630 to 1669. He was also a captain in the military. From 1640-43 he was the church bailiff in Altdorf and from 1650 to 1669 he was a representative to the Swiss diet.

In 1663 he moved to Sargans to serve as the landvogt, or bailiff. During his tenure as bailiff, he lived in Sargans Castle and his name and Coat of Arms are still displayed upon the castle walls. He also served several times as an envoy. He married Ana Catharina Behsler with whom he had seven children.

Burkhard died on February 15, 1672 at the age of about 70.

According to the old editions of the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland there is a portrait of Burkhard that survives today. At the time the print edition was published, this portrait was owned by the Aschwanden-Jauch family in Zug, Switzerland.
