Johann Zumbrunnen, Captain

Life Sketch
Johann Zumbrunnen III was the son of Heinrich Zumbrunnen and Maria Jauch.

School records suggest he was born in 1595. In 1610, at the of 15, he enrolled at the Collège Saint-Michel in Fribourg. Students often enrolled to master their French, which would have been useful for Johann, as he became a mercenary who spent much of his career as a captain in the French service. Whether he married or had children is unknown; if he did they may have emigrated from Uri or indeed never lived there at all.

He was killed in 1648 in Flanders (which is located today in Belgium though at the time was part of the Netherlands). This was the final year of the Thirty Years War in Europe, which took place in that region and in which he was surely a participant.
