Conrad Zumbrunnen

Life Sketch
Conrad Zumbrunnen was likely born in the mid-1200s. While some sources say he was the second son of Landammann Burkhard Zumbrunnen, I believe he was more likely the son of Burkhard “Schüpfer” Zumbrunnen. He was mentioned as a Knight in the Order of St. Lazarus in 1296, and thus lived until at least this year. While an old source from 1296 mentions that he was a knight, it does not imply that he was only a knight for this one year, and likely spent most of his adult life affiliated with the Order.

Conrad was memorialized in the Yearbook of the Monastery of the Order of St. Lazarus on April 29. Interestingly, he is recorded as Conrad Zumbrunnen Von Löwenstein (the name inherited from his great great grandmother Richenza Von Löwenstein). Most of the ancient Zumbrunnen did not use this as their name. I speculate that, as the second son, Conrad assumed the Von Löwenstein name and perhaps some associated lands as his part of the inheritance. (Just as Walter Zumbrunnen had begun calling himself Zumbrunnen after his share of an inheritance split.)

There is also a Conrad memorialized on February 20 in the yearbook of the St. Andreas Church in Attinghausen. It’s possible that this Conrad was his distant cousin the Abbot Conrad Zumbrunnen.
