Lord Lamprecht, Knight of Attinghausen

Life Sketch
Lord Lamprecht, Knight of Attinghausen appears to be the earliest known lord of the Castle of Attinghausen. He is possibly the founder of the castle, as well as one of the founders of the church in Attinghausen.

He was likely born before the year 1100. The ruins of the original Attinghausen Castle have been dated by archaeologists to around the year 1100, which is consistent with thinking that Lamprecht may have been the founder.

The exact genealogy around Lamprecht is uncertain. He appears in the ancient Necrology of Attinghausen on November 26 (likely his date of death) where he is identified as “Herr Lamprechts eines Ritters von Attighausen” which translates to Lord Lamprecht, Knight of Attinghausen. Lamprecht cannot be identified with any other noble families in central Switzerland, and is likely a member of the founding family of the castle.

According to The History of the Barons of Attinghausen and Schweinsberg by Theodor Von Liebenau, and supported by the ancient church books of Attinghausen, we know the names of three very early lords of Attinghausen: Albrecht, Heinrich. If Lamprecht is indeed the founder of the castle, then Heinrich and Albrecht likely represent the generations between him and Werner I, the Baron of Attinghausen. There is no way to determine if Heinrich is Albrecht’s father, or vice versa.

The names of two early wives of this family are also known: Bertha and Othilia. But it is impossible to know if either were married to Lamprecht, or if they were married to his son or grandson.

  • Lamprecht of Attinghausen is mentioned in Theodor Von Liebenau’s “History of the Barons of Attinghausen and Schweinsberg”
  • There’s a discussion of Lamprecht’s entry in the ancient churchbooks in “Die Burgruine Attinghausen” by Helmi Gasser, in Volume 102 (2011) of Historisches Neujahrsblatt, a Swiss history journal.
  • Lamprecht appears in the ancient Necrology of Attinghausen on November 26 (likely his date of death) where he is identified as “Herr Lamprechts eines Ritters von Attighausen”.
  • There’s a debate over the origins of the Barons of Attinghausen. Lamprecht’s appearance in such ancient church records supports the hypothesis that the Attinghausen Castle was built by an ancient Alemanni family that lived in Uri (and were not outside colonizers).
