Walter Von Attinghausen was likely born in the mid- to late-1100s in Attinghausen Castle. He was the second son of Werner, the Baron of Attinghausen and Richenza Von Löwenstein. His older brother Werner II Von Attinghausen would inherit his father’s baronial seat and the castle of Attinghausen. In 1209, Walter was given possession of the Zumbrunnen Castle, which was part of his mother’s inheritance. He changed his name to Walter Zumbrunnen, becoming the first Zumbrunnen.
In some records, his name is spelled Waltert. An old spelling for the name Zumbrunnen was Ze Dem Brunnen.
